Alternator sprayed with hose blow-now toast?
'00 Disco II, 250K, engine rebuild 20K ago.
Friday after school, driving and had just turned into a shopping center, noticed the steering was very hard to turn and the battery light came on. Stopped, popped the hood and anticipated a broken belt, but found that the bottom hose assembly blew and sprayed coolant upward all over the front of the engine, small hole in the top of the "Y" in the hose.
Replaced the hose, filled with coolant, ready to follow the RAVE bleed procedure which I have done before. Started the engine and the battery light was still on. Looked at the alternator and the pulley was not turning the same speed as the belt. Thinking the belt was still slick with coolant, I cleaned the belt with some electonics spray cleaner, as I was concerned about spraying near the alternator. Restarted the engine, and now a scream or howl sounding like a failed bearing.
Thought and advice would be appreciated. Do I need to replace the alternator? Really had other plans during fall break other than working on my Rover.
Thanks!!
