Amsoil Oil Change?

RE: Amsoil Oil Change?
2000 Disco.......82,000 miles. Runs well. Was wondering if Amsoil is worth the expense, or is it just slick (no pun intended) marketing?
Also, anyone know any good alternatives to the uber expensive safari roof rack? Have seen some that look a little more industrial.
Any good sources?

DiscoBob,
I'm my experience, any good quality synthetic oil will serve your discovery well. Some brands are more expensive than others, but a lot of it is just hype.Any of the top brand synthetics are good. The main reason for running a synthetic in the first place is to keep the engine running a little cooler by reducing friction, any of the top brands will do that for you.10w40 is a good universal weight to start with.Discovery V8's get hot fast and the main killer of these engines is overheating.Whatever you can do to keep this engine running cooler is money well spent,be it top quality synthetic oil , running a premium coolant or what have you.As for your roof rack question,Rovers North and Atlantic british both carry good quality aftermarket racks in a couple of different styles.

Even with the better quality synthetic oils, you must chnage the fluid more frequently, usually by at least 5000 miles, Rover engines run way to rich and contaminate the oil with fuel.
As for the roof rack, you are out of luck for now, Saftey device is no linger making them nor is Rovers North.

The oils that are truly better have the ability to not turn acidic over time better than other oils - AMSoil is very good at this.
Problem is our trucks put too much gas in the oil for this to ever become a concern.
You can get your oil tested for about $20 - do this every few oil changes and you'll learn a lot.

Amsoil is a good oil, but it is expensive. I would recommend that you use Mobile 1 full synthetic. Royal Purple and Amsoil out perform other oils, but since they cost so much more, it isn't worth it. You can't get the extended drains out of these oils, so it makes the cost an issue. Mobile 1 is a good oil.
FYI, last month Corvette Enthusiast Magazine did an independant test to see if RP was better than Mobile 1. RP beat Mobile 1 by 3 hp and 5 Ft-lbs of torque
