Default Another Crank position sensor thread

2004, 118K miles. Drove it home no CEL, parked it, came back 1 hr later, cranks but will not start. Everything Ive read says crank position sensor. Anything else I should be checking to confirm this? Autozone sensor ok to use?

Sounds like it. I used the Advance Auto sensor with no issues. If you wanna save yourself some heartache take my lead:

The first thing you always check is the fuel pump relay. It has very similar symptoms to the CKS.

Swap it with the wiper relay next to it, then try to crank the truck. Takes 5 seconds.

if you put a scanner on the track and crank it does it read 0 for RPM,
if so probably a CPS

Im going to try this in the morning...

Im stumped now though.
Swapped the relays to make sure it wasnt the fuel pump relay. No difference. Replaced the CPS with a bosch unit today. Started up and drove fine no codes and then just shut down while driving. Still no CEL or even pending codes. It will start intermittently if I let it sit but wont run for more than 2-3 miles before dying and giving me the crank, no start symptom again.

You might put your hand up near where the exhaust manifold meets the y-pipe, while it's still cool enough to do so, and check for exhaust escaping at the flange. Someone recently suggested that an exhaust leak there cooks the crank sensor and could be part of these failures. Seems like an interesting and plausible idea.

Fuse box would be my next guess if the new sensor isn't fixing it.

I had the EXACT same issue after replacing my CPS. It ended up being a loose connection where the CPS connector plugs up. You really have to SQUEEZE those two together tight. I felt a click when doing so and its been fine ever since!
