Definitely need the shroud. Charlie had problems because that was a poorly designed fan from the start. The ford fan is much better quality. It's actually integrated with the shroud, you wont be able to mount the ford fan without the shroud. As for the cheaper fans... Don't. I've tried them and they're just not good enough for our V8 engines.

On that thought, is the shroud really necessary? I see several 8-bladers so far that are just the fan & no shroud too. They're more inexpensive, but I'm not sure of the CFM on those.

I want to do mine with a controller, so I will have to sort out which one of those to use. I assume I want a Ford part from the same cars as the fan, and I see there are preset & adjustable ones.
Yeah that shroud I had caused my truck to overheat on the highway with the fan running! It worked after I cut holes in it but I put the regular fan back in. I'd prefer electric.

thank for the input, guys.

as I said, I found several different ones, mainly on eBay... and decided to jump on an used, original Ford one for $80 instead of a Taiwan replacement, in case it was bought before I could sort out the cheap ones. not sure what the differences are, but figured the Ford one may be a more sure bet.

just gotta figure out what controller to get & how to wire it in now. is there somehow other than the lighter socket to hook up a controller? I've never had to do something quite like this....

Alex are you still happy with that fan? I still have all of the relay and temperature sensor stuff from my aborted fan. Where did you get yours? Off of an actual Mustang? Off of the Internet? Are you still happy with it?

I can't or won't fix the other issues I'm having so I need a project this week.

Charlie, I got mine used off of eBay and I'm still extremely pleased with it. This would be quite the easy project for you since you still have everything installed.

Matt, as for the wiring you only use the lighter socket if you're not using a controller. With the controller you can just hook it straight to the battery which is how I have mine now. The controller will have installation instructions. There's no need to use a switched power source with the controller because once the vehicle is off it will automatically shut off once the radiator reaches a certain temp. It will go on and off for about 10 minutes after shutting off the vehicle, but most of that time will be off and only comes back on a couple times because of heat soak. After that it will stay off until it comes back on. That wont hurt your battery in any way unless its already about to die. If you wish to connect it to a switched power source through the controller there are still ways such as the cigarette lighter, but not necessary and in my opinion nor worth the effort.

that makes sense, and was pretty much exactly what I was wondering. I see there is something inbetween the harness pigtail & the fan motor on the one I just bought, and I *think* I see it on yours as well now... what is that? at first I thought it was a built-in controller, but you said you didn't use one.

the new replacement ones I see don't have that, just a different harness lead.

So, I think I am going to be a bit of a nuisance now. lol....

could you show me what controller & relay you use? I thought I had it figured out, but confused the hell out of myself.

and do you know what is the part I have circled in red? this is my fan & I do not see that on many of the other "oem" fans. is that a relay? is all I need to do is ground this & run 2 wires to positive terminals for the 2 speeds?

sorry for the dumb questions. like I said, I confused myself & want to compare to your install.

I learned this lesson on a high HP Chevelle I built. Letting the fan controller do it's job is definitely the right route in that case.

Hey Charlie, where did you get the fan and shroud that didn't work for you? Was it FF Dynamics?

yup. FF dynamics was the company. i bought the same one and was given a crook of bull**** about its supposed to.be smaller to allow airflow at highway speds. it was months after the fact so I never pushed the issue. so ots been sitting in my basement.

The FF dynamics fan shroud is too small. by a lot.
