“Some” people bypass the interlock all together with a zip tie on the 03-04 models. However it then could get bumped into N or 4Lo easily (which would NOT be good). If you got it to shift out 4Hi it will go into N first then all the way forward is 4Lo.

Any suggestions on where to access wire to solenoid to test other than removing shifter or from underneath?

You remove that assembly from above, remove console, drill out the rivets securing the black plate into position, and then unbolt the 4 bolts securing the 4wd shifter to the black plate.

That's what I've read.
Was hoping to be able to do it from below... Are least remove the solenoid altogether for now.

It's not hard from above, the rivets are the only true PITA, once those are out it's a piece of cake. When re-installing DO NOT use rivets!!! Just use some #14 1/2 screws to resecure the black plate.
