Anyone ever replaced the lifters/tappets?
But you have tightened up all 6 downpipe to cat bolts just to be sure. Pretty much all D1's will develop a tick that sounds EXACTLY like a lifter problem, and tightening up those 6 bolts usually solves the problem. If you've already done that as part of your general maintenance, then just ignore me and carry on!
Check your oil pressure first, cold at idle and at 2000 RPM's and warm at idle and 2000 RPM's.
If good then pull the lifter, before replacing, though, check for hardened surface wear on the cam lobes also, if warn, you'll need a cam also, do a 4.6 factory cam if necessary.
You also want to check each push rod fore wear on either end as well as their length, cause they do loose length when wear occurs.

well.......the sad fact is that the lifters wont come out without removing the heads..there wasn't designed enough room to get the lifter through the head, and even if there was the lifter may not just slide out of it's position due to wear on the bottom of the lifter, BUT there is some good news......It may not be a lifter, ( if your heads arent leaking and you dont want to tear into that yet ) I have found that a lot of top end noise is due to years of wear on the rockershafts / rocker arms / and pushrods, on these engines there are only a few thousands of an inch wear between noisy and quiet. I went through basically your same situation a few months ago and ended up replacing the rocker shaft assys and push rods.....now it sounds like a different engine. Remove the valve covers and remove the rockershafts as you were going to do anyway....look them over good and if there are ANY signs of wear its probably time to replace them as well as the push rods. the parts needed are available a lot of places...I got mine from AtlanticBritish.....$300-$400.
NOT 300.. biatch you crazy is what you tell that vulture mechanic. do your research and fix it. don't let anyone touch your landy. PEACE!!!!!!
