You post makes our point, an add on $75 chip is not the solution. So.... what kind of mpg are you getting before / after? And that web site lists compatible ECUs and chip sets, Land Rover is missing.

I put one of the things on a Ford Ranger(4 cyl) that I used for a work truck a few years ago. All they do is tell your computer that the air is sucking in is colder and more dense than it actually is. I guess you might get a little more HP because it makes you run rich, but it would have to cause a decline in MPG to do so. I took it off the little ranger beacuse it idled really rough when when it warmed up, and it didnt really give me a noticable gain HP. I still had trouble pulling my Seadoos up the boat ramp with that 2.3 Liter 4 cyl. Had to buy a bigger truck. Which is why I am here today! Hello Discovery II!

Not sure if you are referring to me. The Bosch Motronic ECU mapping tables are very similar across the line. Ferrari, BMW, Audi, and Land Rover tables work the same. The shift points on the Land Rover are a pig. I'd modify them as well. The sport mode is ok, but normal operation sucks. A Land Rover does not have much low end grunt as far as I am concerned and moves to early to the next gear. The added RMP under a light load helps more than hurts.

Pedal travel in normal mode to get the dog moving is to extensive, and the remapping helps eliminate this. My mileage is about 15 mpg after the top hats and roller rocker modifications. I also did a mild port on the exhaust ports and manifold. The stock exhaust manifold can barely fit a pea through it. I am going to add a set of headers and run a crossover for low end scavenging soon. Remember, a tuned pipe can scavenge much better than the cast manifolds. Multiple resonances also come into effect for additional power. Anti reversion cones can be added as well.

Old crap with a new toy. Unfortunately, it is under powered and has too many weak links.

Yes, I was asking you. So 15 mpg after considerable modification. I do not dispute that the mods for performance have a plus, but for the average owner wanting better mpg on the cheap it may not be a fiscal reality. I get 15 - 17 now in a D1 with 183K. You have spent more on your mods (based on parts plus a reasonable $250 an hour for your labor) than a lot of guys spend on their truck. At the end of the day it is still a brick. You have the quicker brick. But you don't have a 25 mpg petrol brick.



Each owner decides how much time and treasure to invest in the Rover experience.

I did the mods because I did not like the performance of the Discovery as read on the internet. I certainly would do the next one (if there will ever be another) differently. Certainly much cheaper and with the same reliability as it now has.

I get 0 to 60 in 8 seconds flat. Not sure of the 1/4 mile time. Red line is now 5900 rpm. The 15 mpg is mixed driving, mostly highway with some in town driving. Yes, it's a brick with a panoramic view. Testing my skills has its rewards and pride. I am sure others feel this way as well when working on their vehicles.

4.0 liters
Top Hat liners
4.6 cam
mild porting on exhaust side
ECU remapping
modified roller rocker arm system. Oil thru push rod
Basically a new engine.

It is important to know that it can be done, with enough resources. A practical vehicle becomes a hobby then an obsession. The only known cure for Rover Rash is more Rovers. For many of us it is too late to get vaccinated.

A number of new owners will visit the dealer once, faint when they see the invoice, then pick up a wrench and join you under the hood. For some, it is another pass at teenage auto mechanics. DIY shows an owner they can handle things. We have far too many visitors to the site that don't have a copy of the RAVE shop manual, have not learned how to use the search feature of their PDF software, etc.

Our members "range" from the new owner of a new ROver to the latest owner of a Disco with blown head gasket.

You are braver than I... I would never turn my 4.0 5900 RPM. Thats Awesome! I'd love to hear the note it sings at full song.

That's for a new thread. As for the original premise of this one I think we can all agree that just a $69 chip to increase our mpg by 7+ is blowing more smoke than half a can of Sea Foam.
