anyone mounted a jerry can to the spare tire?
Columbia Overland has one option here. Nate Bottorf of Bottorf manufacturing also makes a tire carrier that features a modular fuel can carrier. You just pop out the center cap of the spare, slide in the fuel can carrier in the now-visible receptacle, retain with a pin, and you are done. Remove when not needed.
I have not done it myslef but I have some thoughts on it. I guess it will boil down to what you really plan on doing.
If you left it on there filled all the way for a long time period then it could cuase some sagging of the door. If you did it while just on off road trips then it would not be a constant weight and can last a while. The other option is if you are just going to keep it part way full so you can make it to a gas station it should be able to handle the weight all the time.
Good Luck with it.

It is a strain on the hinges if the door is opened while the can is mounted. Many of the Camel tropy trucks had problems with the hinges because people would stand on the spare with the door open.
Exactly! But with the weight only being about 45 lbs it would not be as bad. Like I said in my post, if you just carry a couple of gallons to make it to a gas station then you are probably okay, extended use of it while full is probably not the best idea.
I replaced the rear tire carrier with a jerry can holder because I don't mind having the spare in the back but there is no way I would drive with gas in the cabin. Another option would be a smaller, 1/2 gal size that would be enough to get you to the gas station but not enough to weigh anything. I would also imagine that if you were just riding around with a partially filled can, condensation could be more of an issue. I also found this the other day but I'm not sure how they would work with our set up. Maybe reverse the spare? I don't have a website just a pic borrowed from another forum. It is commonly found with the mercedes.
