anyone mounted a jerry can to the spare tire?
That's the same one I posted in my reply at the top. You can pay $100 for that, or you can spend less and get a tire carrier + fuel can holder from Nate. Seems like a no-brainer to me...
You need to call him as he doesn't have it on his site. Also, they can be quite custom. I sent him drawings of what I wanted and he fabricated it right up. His number is on his website and I promise he is one of the best guys you are going to find to work with. You can see pictures of how my tire sits with the new carrier in my thread from earlier this week here. I don't have the fuel carrier in place in that pic, but all that needs to be done is pop out the center cap and slide in the post. I will try to do this and take a pic for you later.
I think it is safe to say it will have a big effect on the hinges. 41 pounds plus the extended distance out from the door has to takes it's toll. If you do something like this only carry the can when really necessary and keep an eye on the hinges.
If people are THAT worried about the stress on hinges, just pull out the fuel can before opening the door when you are carrying one around. The door has a retaining pin on the latch side that will reduce stress on the hinges (allowing us to go up and down the ladder). I really think it will be negligible, however, from an engineering standpoint given how much time the door spends ajar vs. closed.
