Ok so as many of you know my Disco is my first car, and I'm pretty much terrible with any sort of maintenance. It's come time to replace my transmission fluid, and I don't want to screw it up. I've got all the fluid, but where exactly is the plug I want to remove to do a flush and refill?

 

How many miles are on your truck? You may want to consider replacing the filter too. It's something that is supposed to be done once (at 20K or 30K don't remember), but I will do it just to be sure. You'll also need the gasket since it requires you to drop the pan.

edit: Sorry, I didn't see you have a D1. The instructions are for a D2. If you want to remove the pan there's a cross member you'll have to remove first. I don't know if the drain and fill plugs are the same.

Thanks D2G, I have 122k miles, so I'd love to replace the filter but I just don't have the money I think I have $18 left in my checking.

I did find the plug though, I just wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally drain the t case or something else without knowing. Anyway, this truck was my dad's (who didn't know **** about Rovers) and the fluid in there was brown/black, so obviously in pretty bad shape. I'm gonna replace the fluid again in like 3-5k miles to try and get some of that bad fluid out of there, and when I do that I'll do the filter too.

 

On your 96 its 4.5 qts ATF.
If you are going to change the trany filter you will
have to take the Y-pipe off its not hard but if you are on you back its very hard Good Luck.

 

The diagram provided by Disco2 is almost right, because I think that on D1's you have to fill by the dipstick. You will need an allen key to unscrew the drain plug. Is it possible to buy a normal drain plug somewhere? Because I would like to change it.

If you Rover is like mine, the tranny oil pan is easy to recognize since it is the only one starting to rust due to the exhaust. I intend to do the flush and refill soon on mine. Good Luck
