Default Axle nut size? D2 / P38

What size socket is needed to remove the axle nut on a D2 / P38?

I need to change and axle seal “in the field” and what to make sure I have it.

The one I have to replace is a 32mm. I have an extra nut if you want me to ship it to you.

1 1/4” fits (I’m sure 32mm is more correct though)

the seal is replaced.

There was evidence of leaking from the seal and it looks like the CV boot might also be leaking a bit. When I cleaned it and inspected I could not find visible tear so it may be a small pin hole.

The seal itself was fouled, but I am a little surprised it gave up so suddenly.

Just for good measure the ball joint on the pitman arm decided to break. Thankfully it was in a parking lot a very slow speed. I suppose those conditions put the greatest stress on steering components, but I am not happy having installed a new drag link just 3 years ago when I began this restoration project.

I'll spend the extra and go with Lemforder ball joints this time and will replace both drag link and tie rod.

Check to see if the axle flange is in its proper place. I had a serious leak which leaked about a quart of oil through both seals splattering the tires in oil. The seals were fine but the flange had come off and had a decent gap which allowed it to flow out and get picked up by the tires and flung everywhere. Not the exact same scenario, but if you still have it out its worth checking.

I didn't realize the flanges were adjustable. It seemed rather set in place as I cleaned the flat surface which makes contact with the seal.

They shouldn't. Mine are upgraded HD axles and the flange didn't properly fit. It slid off if I tapped it hard enough. It was actually held in by a mixture of green and red Loctite. I couldn't source a proper flange in time so I did the same thing. Its been 6 months and it still working knock on wood. Not sure if its a problem with the factory axles but you never know!
