Default Axle Spline Question

I have been getting increasing gear whine from my front diff when hitting the gas pedal. The whine goes away when I left off the gas. I understand this is symptomatic of a worn ring/pinion. Time to work on the front diff.

I recollect 10-spline shafts come on non-ABS Rovers and 24-splines are standard on ABS Rovers. Can someone confirm if my axle shaft is 10-spline and 24-spline please?

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry to hear about your front diff situation. Hope you were able to make it home with the Disco.

Are you sure it’s not the transfer case gear train. Check oil level

Hey Andrew, you might just need the diff fluid changed or as mentioned the transfer case topped up. I have the gear to do that, if you get hold of Don at Rovolution we can find out what they used and use the same. It is about an hour to do it.

Thx for the tips! I have a rebuilt Ashcroft t/case, rear diff about a year ago.... and new fluids on all drive train components prior to my Alaska trip 6 months ago. Don - Rovalution test drove the disco in Sept after I came back from the trip. He believes the front diff is on the way out.

Hi ACG - I also have a whine when on the gas around 70+ mph - like yours, it disappears when I take my foot off (and is not present if coasting and the wheels are driving the engine). I figured that if the noise were drivetrain related, it would persist even without applying throttle.

Is this your only symptom of your front diff issue? I've noticed this since I bought my truck but couldn't really find anything on it and chalked it up to being normal. Any insight you can offer on what's happening, how long the prognosis is, and what the resolution would be, would be appreciated!
