Default Bearing replacement

I'm looking to replace both sets of bearings in my '04 Discovery but I'm curious if I can replace the main bearings without removing the crankshaft from the block. Is there a way to simply slip the main bearings into place?

If not, I assume that I have to somehow be able to seperate the engine from the transmission enough to be able to get to the flywheel and remove it thus releasing the crank. Do I have to drop the tranny to do this?

Thanks!
