Can't tell you for sure what happened, probably the only way to tell will be to pull it down and open her up. At that point you will need to shop around and see what will be cheaper for you, rebuilding or replacing it.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Provided that the transmission worked completely fine before, and this happened all of a sudden:

This is likely asticky valve in the valve body. A sticky valve can be resolved without pulling the transmission - you (or your trusted repair shop) can pull the transmission pan off and pull the valve body out through the bottom. The valve bodiescan sometimes be ultrasonically cleaned or the valve body itselfcan be rebuilt with new seals, etc.Transmission shops usually know what to do with these. The valve body is at the bottom of the transmission and through a series of valves controls where the pressurized ATF is sent to. The pressurized ATF in turn locks you into a given gear. If one or more gears fail all of a sudden, or are intermitten, then a sticky valve would be suspect.

When I answered you the first time I thought you had a 5 speed, my error.
So I agree with the last post, try changing out your fluid, add a bottle of Lucas tranny additive and see if it will free up your valves or solemoids that may be sticking.
let us know what you find.

If it fixes it I would change the fluid and filter again quickly.

New fluid has detergents that will break loose a lot of deposits...so it will work great for a while and then clog/break from all the stuff floating around.
