Default blinking milometer

The guy i bought my LR from had ripped out the warning LED's from the instrument cluster as it had the 3 amigos (also the check engine led)
Aberdeen, auto sales, aberdeen, MD (Mr Blackiston)...last car i ever buy on ebay!
i found this out when i took it to be inspected.
I bought a used cluster from ebay and installed it on the car, all was fine except the milometer was blinking, so i put the original cluster back in and the milo is now blinking on that also. The LR specialist i took it to (for other problems) did not know why or how to fix it. He did a "digit check" where the computer changed all the digits to 111111..222222...333333..etc etc but instead of showing 111111, it just showed "4"..then from the 2's upwards all was normal.
sorry for all the questions i'm posting at once, but the vehicle has sat off road for 8 months while i've been working on my other love (series 3 '84 jag XJ6)

I'm now using the LR as my daily driver and i want to get all these issues corrected

So your odometer is flashing and not working, just flashing random numbers?

the milo is working fine...just flashing. The numbers i mentioned is part of the LR PC software to check the digits....i'm guessing it failed the 111111 test as instead of reading 111111 it read 4...then as the test went on all the other numbers tested fine

You are not the first to report this happening. I'm not sure what the solution has been though.

Found this in the shop manual. It may or may not help your guy, you definitely need a shop with testbook:

Odometer update
The BCU can be programmed for one of two options:
l Option 1 – no odometer error warning.
l Option 2 – odometer error warning.
In order to provide an LCD flash request to the instrument pack via the communications link, the following inputs are
checked:
l Ignition state.
l Instrument pack odometer value (via the communications link).
l BCU odometer value.
The function is only active when the ignition state is on. The maximum allowed value is 999,999 miles (1,608,999
km).If the instrument pack odometer value is greater than the maximum allowed value, the maximum value is
assumed. The BCU odometer value is stored in EEPROM. If 16 identical values of the instrument pack odometer
reading is received consecutively, the instrument pack odometer value is compared with the BCU odometer value. If
the consecutive readings from the instrument pack differ, the BCU odometer value is incremented accordingly. If the
BCU odometer value is less than the instrument pack odometer value by up to 10 km, the BCU odometer value is set
equal to the instrument pack odometer value.
If the odometer warning option is enabled, and the contents of the instrument pack odometer value buffer is identical
to, or greater than BCU odometer value ± 10 km, the BCU sends an LED flash request to the instrument pack.
In the event of a communications link failure, this function will be unable to operate.

Change of cluster will need a program visit to a shop with an advanced computer, not just a parts store scanner. Maybe while they are in there get them to program immobilization "OFF" if that is an option.... as well as kill off the odometer warning signal. Designed to prevent passing off an older Disco as a younger one. Should be one of the clues in a detective story on TV.
