Bought 2004 Disco with 44K miles. Oil Question
thought............mine has its own desired coolant level. about 1/2" below the reservoir suggestion. it will pee out the overflow, onto the manifold until it reaches its desired level. I found this with a shop towel z-tied around the overflow hose.
Hi guys, I bought a 2004 Disco with 44K miles on it. It looks and drives really well. One problem is that both valve cover gaskets are leaking. I'll try torquing them down first before I consider changing the gaskets. The Question is that I noticed that when I removed the oil fill cap I saw some dark oil deposits on the metal under the valve cover. I surmise that it's probably from oil sitting for long periods of time due to the infrequent use of the vehicle. Are there any procedures or additives that I can flush through (before I change the oil in the next couple of days) to help clean some of the varnish? Will frequent oil changes just dissolve the varnish over time? I also noticed that I hear the waterfall sound and the coolant level was below the cold line. I didn't see any signs of leaking coolant, white smoke, or overheating, but I did see that the throttle body heater is leaking a bit. I'm hoping that it was just loss over time and I will be able to bleed the system when I install the 180 stat (before I use the vehicle any more) and swap the coolant. Any other suggestions of where to look for loss of coolant other than in the oil when I change it? I'm planning on pressure testing it only after I flush and fill the system should I notice a loss of fluid again. Any suggestions are really appreciated.
2) For the oil deposits, you can either : add a flushing additive like Seafoam, or use a high-detergent engine oil. The diesel oils like Shell Rotella have high detergent, and usually are fine for gasoline engines. In fact they have a number of good properties for your engine, like higher ZDDP for example.
Right now I am running half a bottle of seafoam in the oil. They tell you to leave it in until the oil goes dark, but that means you need to start out with clean oil.
Thanks for the positive replies, I haven't done the pressure test yet, I thought I would do that with my mechanic buddy this weekend. I noticed that the coolant likes to sit right at the cold line. Hasn't noticeably gone down since Sunday. I'll have to pick up an ultragauge to keep a better eye on things. Any idea if the heater lines have a specific spot where they like to usually leak, or is basically the front half of the vehicle where they like to usually leak?...and sometimes the back.
I dried alot of stuff up with some good old brake cleaner. Ran it and Then looked. It's what we do at the bus depot i work at. You can always let it idle and watch any areas for drippy he after you clean up what is already there. That's how I narrowed all my leaks down. Besides the piddle marks on the pavement.
