Default brake booster question

pedal is hard but rover stops fine under normal braking. When braking hard I feel like I have to apply more pressure than I should. These boosters have 2 diaphragms right? Does anybody know of a way to check both?

*brake system has been flushed within the past year, front pads are good, rear pads are new, system has been bled twice, booster holds vacuum*

When you bled it, did you -- in some way -- force the ABS modulator to cycle?

The manual recommends, of course, doing this with an option in the menus of the dealer's $30k T4 Testbook, but less expensive model-specific computers will reportedly cycle it as well, or you can bleed it and then go out and force them to fire manually (ABS, TC, and HDC; the three amigos) and then rebleed... as I'm about to have to do myself, now that my replacement modulator has *finally* shown up...

no, I did not cycle the ABS modulator. When you sayd "fire manually" do you mean find a slick surface where the ABS and TC will engage and then go down a steep hill with the HDC on?

That seems to be the recommended procedure if you have to do it manually, yes.

A minority contingent suggests that if you bleed the brakes by pumping the pedal *while the key is on to position 2* (but without the engine running) and holding it for 60 seconds-ish, that this might fire the modulator as well, but I couldn't test that -- likely because mine was inop. Will be trying tonight or tomorrow with the replacement.

Don't worry about the ABS, it has no effect on the brakes stopping power. What brake fluid did you use and what brand of brake pads?

mike, I used brakebest select when I flushed and prestone to top it off last night (both DOT4) The rear pads are just O'reiley store band because that's all they had in stock. Not sure who made front pads, they were on rover when I bought it.

That's not what everyone else -- including you -- has told me.

The modulator will sure as hell have an effect on the stopping if it has air in it...
