Default Brake Job, a NO GO [PICS]

I had my EBC brake kit from AB for a couple weeks not, finally found the time to work on it. The wheel nuts were actually easier to get off than the rim itself.

Everything went smoothly until I got to the two 12-point bolts. Until half way, they got extremely tighter and impossible to loosen off.

You'll see what I mean...

So, I end up putting everything back in place.

Does anyone know why the 12-point became tighter as it loosened?

I tried PB Blaster and cleaned it with brake cleaner no luck.

What about that fluid leak, have you tracked that down yet? I would suggest you deal with that before the brakes so you don't saturate your new brake pads.

Then you have a hub seal or hub that has failed and that needs to be taken care of first.

I just did my front and rear brakes on my Disco1. I alternated beating my ratchet with a hammer and using a cheater bar. Those bolts kicked my ****. While I was at it I replaced the rotors and rebuilt the calipers. Took the front and back sections of the caliper apart and got yelled at when I asked the Land Rover dealership for the little gasket between the caliper halves. "Thats a non servicable part" sorry dude if its got bolts I can take it apart. I cleaned and painted the calipers put on some drilled and slotted rotors, new pads, replaced wheel bearings, drained and filled the front and rear diffs and the swivel pin housings, put on new springs, shocks and 1.5 in coil spacers. Took a month of sundays, saturdays and weekdays. Those caliper bolts were wicked though, maybe the lock tight, fine thread, who knows why they were so tight but they didnt break. Now you get back in there and show that thing who's boss.

2 steps forward and one step back.
Loosen them until they give you fits, tighten them back up a turn or two, loosen again.

As far as that "leak" goes...that is old fluid from who knows what.
As long as everything is full dont worry about it.

Are you sure those are your caliper bolts and not the hub bolts?

I'm with Mike on the leak. You need to address that hub seal or your throwing away your pads. Were your old pads greasy and/or saturated?

Have we decided on any sort of consensus on these EBC brakes? Last I heard a fellow here found them to be terribly loud. Mike have you decided on your next brake job - did you already purchase pads/rotors? If so what did you go with?

I havn't done this job yet... The reason why it got more difficult is because the exposed ends of the bolts corroded and rusted up.

Where in the world did you guys get that I have a leak? I think there was a misconception on Disco Mike's part. I did not mention anything about leaks. This was a brake thread.

There are NO leaks. No brake fluid leaks or hub failure. Nothing!!!

If you thought I had leaks because of the pictures, it was just brake cleaner that hasn't dry yet.

I'll just have to work that bolt and try again. The pads were so bad that it broke in half and now I am forced to use it back. Hopefully I can stop and not break anything.
