Default Breaks squeal - why?

My breaks squeal a lot--I've had the pads checked, and they're fine (they're less than a year old). Is this just normal with Discos? Anything I can do to make them quieter? I think I remember seeing something about a spray somewhere?

Happens at normal traffic light stops, seems to be more frequent when the car is cold...

No idea what pads were used--the work was done by the dealership I bought the Disco from last July.

There is a anti-squeal that you can buy, it usually goes on the back of the pads. Sometimes if you are lucky you can spray the brakes with a brake cleaner and they wont squeal for awhile.

Who put on the pads, what brand was used and were new rotors installed at the same time?

My back left brake has been squealing since I hit the trails last weekend. I tried hosing anything that could have been wedged in between the pad and the rotor, still squeaks though... I might need to remove the pad and check for a little rock or something.

Your pad could have "dis-lodged" and is not properly in place.

Pull it apart before you damage something.

funny you brought this up because one of the first things I did to my wife's disco was replace the brake pads because I felt the pedal was a little soft. I bought the pads from NAPA and they were still fairly costly.

Despite the pads already having the built-in rubber shim, I applied plenty of brake-quiet. I used the bottled stuff on the front and went a little overboard with it, on the rears I used the spray-tack.

Brakes were nice and quiet after that, but I just recently noticed some squeeling action again. In the near future I'm going to check the rotors to see if they are within spec. I'm not familiar enough with these vehicles in general to say whether brake squeel is common but I know my pads are good...maybe they just accumulate alot of dust? At least I can spray down the rotor and caliper with brake cleaner without having to take off the wheels.

Get back to us before you buy another set of pads, Napa by the way, isn't on the list of pads that work well.

I'm just a shade-tree mechanic. Like I said, replacing the pads was one of my top priorities because I didn't want my wife driving around on brakes that I didn't know the condition of.

I can respect that everyone likes to spoil their discos...but I really have to wonder how much of a difference there are in brake pads? After all, Napa doesn't even make their own pads, they just re-label them. I didn't go with the "economy" version either. I just find it a bit odd or strange that over the past 12 years or so I've owned numerous vehicles (granted, nothing as nice as a land rover) and I have replaced countless brake pads and shoes and I've never had a squeak return this quickly.

Maybe I'll bite the bullet and buy an entire kit from Roverparts, pads rotors and stainless steel hoses...recommendations while we're at it?

If you get a set of pads with too much metallic content, they will eventually squeel. They will also set off your ABS light. Ask me how I know....
