Default Broken HSE

i have a D2 HSE 2003. It overheats with a load. And I mean like 20 seconds to redline. From what I gather that’s a hole in the block or blown head gasket. No water in the oil.
Thinking of cutting my losses with this one and getting a different one. What’s it worth as is? Parts. It’s in good condition otherwise or- am I overlooking something silly?

Rule out all of the silly stuff first. You are premature in your judgement.

Right off the bat I'd say if you are relying on the dash temp gauge you are lacking 90% of the info you need to make ANY decision.

Find out whats wrong first, then decide what to do.

Lots of answers but only after you do lots of reading on here.

Best of luck, but I doubt its as dire as you think.

Default Overheat

not relying on my dashboard lol. He water spewing out of the engine compartment gave it away. It will idle fine. As soon as it goes into gear with a load it immediately overheated

Sounds like poor coolant flow to me, clogged radiator, stuck closed thermostat, bad fan clutch, or bad water pump. If it’s engine wise you’d smell fuel in the coolant, hoses would be rock hard, or your oil could look like a mocha latte.

It's probably all of the above. I'd start with a full cooling system overhaul.

Pull the radiator - shove a waterhose in one end and check the flow out of the other end. If the radiator flows free, do the bypass thermostat mod with no thermostat. Also, O'Reilly has the exhaust gas/coolant tester available to use for free.

Good luck.

Default I’ll try

I’ll try the radiator. I’ve changed the thermostat and tried to test for exhaust in the water but really inconclusive. Couldn’t get a good test. I was thinking about doing a chemical flush. I’ve been told land rovers are pretty touchy with coolant

They aren't touchy with coolant at all, unless of course you neglect it. Just make sure no leaks, no waterfalls, and no Dexcool.
