I have been looking around for a rack for my D2 and as you all know the SDs can go for over a grand. My question is has anyone tried to build their own roof rack? Seems like i could do it for a lot less money. Input?

use search on here, somebody posted plans a while back. It can be done but it would take somebody with really good fab skills to replicate the SD rack with those bends that follow the roof line.

I have the skills/tools/time i think. Maybe i will just duck tape some cardboard boxes on the roof... I have been looking at the posts that other people have put up here. I think that i am just going to get 8 gutter mounts, i have not decided which ones yet, and start cutting and welding with 3/4" OD cold rolled. I will let you all know with pics how this ends up.

the cost of 4 gutter mounts is 150$ for 8 your already at 300$..... then take into the cost of the metal, time and finishing the rack...... you'll still wish that you bought one rather than build it!!!!

i was building my own, it was getting really difficult and becoming along pita.... when i found a older rack that i modified to make it my own...

i still today wish i bought one!!!!

Yeah, you're probably right. But I was thinking of building one out of pressure treated 2 by 10's or maybe some square metal tubing rather than pipe.

Keep that redneck appearance going strong.
