Default Burning smell under the hood

03 Disco

I've suddenly noticed a burning smell and traced it to under the hood - it's strong and smells a bit like burning plastic, not like oil or coolant.

Didn't notice anything obvious with a visual check...

Any suggestions on what to check or what it could be?

Are you still in warranty, if so it is time for a visit to the dealer to repair something.
If it is plastic smelling, it could be wires and this isn't good, are you sure you don't have an oil leak like the valve covers leaking on the the exhaust manifold?

it just went out of warranty a few weeks ago, of course

electrical or wiring related was my first thought, but nothing found yet - I've read where some people have had plastic bags stick to the exhaust manifold underneath, so I'll check that later today...

otherwise, guess I'll have to take it to the shop to have the electrical checked

If you take it to the dealer and it does prove to be wiring I would suggest you talk with the service manager regarding repairing it under warrant, even though you are out, he has the ability to do that, depending on the severity of the problem and what caused it. He can also call Rover to get permisson to do the repair.
