There is a noticable difference between the 4.0 and 4.6...power wise...and some say reliability. Biggest factor is finding a rig that previous owner(s) have kept up on maintenance and repairs.

Thought l saw a nice 99 for sale here the other day, it was a lot of rover for the money...but l'm not seeing it now.

Good luck, with your search.

Brian.
I have 4, cannot feel the difference in power between 4.6 and 4.0, but I can vouch that the 03+ are the only ones I have ever had with slipped cylinder liners.
Here is the truck your were referencing for sale:

You will feel the HP difference after you modify a 4.0L, D2 but I’ve had excellent results with 4.0’s vs 4.6L’s in 03-04 D2’s.

It did on my other car but I made sure I did really good prep work, any good paint made for headers would suffice as well

I must say, my least problematic Land Rover EVER has been my 02 4.0. It has about 200k miles on it, and it doesn't make one strange noise. Original everything, including driveshaft but with rebuild Moog u-joints. Its had 1 head gasket in its life, and not much more than that. Runs 183F anything over 15MPH, and 194-195 idling. Original cooling fans, with Britpart 180F thermostat.

sounds like most of you guys are in agreement that the 4.0 is more reliable, sounds like id be best off with an 00 or 01 then add the CDL linkage or just crawl underneath with a wrench for 4x4. lots of 02s for sale in my area but as far as i know they dont have the CDL
