Default to buy or not to buy

Hey all,

I've been wanting to make the jump to a Disco for awhile now. I'm not afraid of maintenance as I have a Jag and know all about British reliability. I found an '04 for a good deal but it has 174k on it. The owner says "I've made all the common high mileage LR Disco repairs to this vehicle (head gaskets/plug wires, transfer case, new front drive shaft, replaced water-pump/timing chain/oil pan gasket and front main seal, o2 sensors and mass air meter, power steering pump, new windshield this summer)" and there are "newer terra grappler tires with 14k" on it. How many miles can one expect out of these engines?

I think 174k is a little high for a 04. Considering my 2000 has 176k...

you may want to check and see just exactly when those high milage repairs were made, becuase at 174k, they are probablly due again.

How much are they asking and what will you be using it for?

He's asking 5k on craigslist but emailed me and said he'd take 4k. It would be a 3rd vehicle for me for when I want to throw the kids in to go to the drive-in (yes we still have 'em in Minneapolis ), camping, haul the kayaks, and maybe I'd like to try off-roading once in awhile. This would be an occasional use vehicle in the summer but a bit more in the winter. Speaking of kayaks, has anyone done it? Isn't it pretty high to be hoisting kayaks?

Thanks OilspotLR, it's an encouraging high mileage post.

For a 3rd vehicle with most major maintenance completed for 4k is pretty damn good. 174k is a good amount of miles but it should last you a while. Do you have a pics or a link to the sale? Make sure you get a pre purchase inspection if you are serious.
