I once heard about 400 lbs dry, but I have no source. Hopefully someone will wander through and either confirm or deny.

I don't know specific weight, but the 400lbs quote is close. These are small aluminum V8s that are among the lightest. Don't know your weight ranges available, but if you are not concerned about medium to big block engines in future use, a 450-500lb rating will cover your current concern.

Even a super-cheap engine stand will generally do the job, particularly if you don't make a career of engine rebuilds.

A word to the wise, though - It's worth springing for one with 4 casters instead of 3. I made the mistake of buying a 3-caster job off craigslist for 10 bucks. It held the engine (Audi V8) just fine, although it caught on a crack in my ancient garage floor and tipped over while I was moving it around. A 4-caster version would have held its balance much better.

This one really sucks

750 lb. Capacity Engine Stand

This one sucks

1000 lb. Capacity Engine Stand

This one is the one I would buy if I was doing it again

2000 lb. Capacity Foldable Engine Stand

I have the middle one and I reinforced it. It held the 3.9 Rover motor ok it definitely bowed a lot with the weight. I was concerned about it but it was far worse when I put a 302 ford on it and I welded in some bracing.

The middle one flexes badly when you are moving the engine around on it.

From p.67 of my RAVE PDF for the Discovery Series II V8.

I don't know why the engine mated with a manual trans would weigh 33 lbs more than the automatic version, but in any case the answer seems to be 402 lbs.
