Like number9 said, the pulley should come with a bearing installed. The pulley assembly is usually held on by a snap ring. Sometimes you have to use a puller to get the pulley off. Just be careful not to damage the compressor shaft. It should be okay, just keep it in mind while removing and reinstalling the pulley. Other than that, there's not much to it.

They go bad all different ways. Sometimes they just stop working, the shims can wear out, the bearings can go bad, etc.
If it's got a grumbling sound in it, the bearing is probably shot.
I had a bearing actually fall apart on one of my other cars. The pulley was off center when I looked at it. It didn't fall off because it's sandwiched between the compressor and the clutch hub. That made some serious noise!

I did the A/c clutch repair. My kit did not come with a new pulley so had to press the old bearing out with a hammer, and socket. I did not have snap ring pliers so had to get some, but not a terribly hard job with the right tools.
The old one was obviously the original and very dirty. The bearing was fine. A/C did seem to be running a bit better.
However, at the end of the test drive the A/C goes intermittent, shutting the compressor on and off. I am going to test the temperature sensor in the cabin. I can't think what else may be telling the system not to work.
