Default Can I get help with the brakes on my 97 Discovery please?

Hi guys, my dad and I are trying to fix the driver side Caliper on our 1997 Land Rover Discovery. The brake lines themselves are in good shape, but when you pump the brake pedal, oil leaks from what seems to be within the caliper. Can anyone diagnose this problem? My dad is thinking to buy a new Caliper, and I really would rather make sure we need it before we shell out that kind of money for one. Thanks in advance guys.

Yes, you do need to either rebuild the calipers, if they are not yet damaged or replace both calipers, depending on the mileage on your truck.
How often have you change the brake fluid, and what is your mileage?

Mileage is around the 130K miles range. Brake fluid has been changed to my knowledge, the only problem is this is only the right drivers side caliper, not the passengers side.

Should I get both rebuilt or replaced? Or do I hope the passenger side holds up?

Thank you very much Mike.

The brake caliper piston seals are shot, and allowing brake fluid seepage. There are re-build kits available, but from experience I would say that your Dad has the right idea. Buy a replacement. I have a new caliper (not a remanufactured one) in stock for $ 238.75 (plus shipping).

Read my tech info sections at http://www.eurotekapg.com/techinfo.html to get a overall view of your Land Rover and common problem areas.

One other item I forgot to mention is-- like Disco Mike said, it is recommended that on ABS equipped vehicles that both calipers be replaced on a given axle. In addition, if you buy a set of two, the price drops to $225.00 each with the shipping additional.
