Default Sunroof replacement

I just became a new Land Rover owner today buying a 1995 Discovery. I got a great deal and all is in fantastic shape except something I was warned to be careful of...the front sunroof. The previous owner stated it was making odd noises and to be aware that if I did open it I may not be able to close it. His prediction happened 6hrs after I bought the car.

I have taken the entire headliner out (needed to be re-done anyway) and discovered the rail on the right side had a bent part in the track. While trying to straigten it...I broke it.

So this brings me to my question(s).
I did a search on the forum and saw repairs for the electric sunroof, but has anyone ever replaced the entire sunroof with an after market unit that was either a pop-up or mechanical? Also, if this is not a doable option where can I find replacement rials to get me back to work. The motor is fine and the tracking "screws" the motor gear grabs hold of look ok...not great...I may have to replace them too? Where can I find those?

Any advise on these 3 questions would be great?

Thanks in advance.

This looks like to be a good parts source.

You might want to clean and lube your sun roof rails.

The sunroof rails as a new part are only available from the Dealer. We have seen frequent failures and replace about 10 sets a year on both the Range Rover and Discovery. The rails cost approx. $350 for the parts, and the labor is about 3.5 hours. Last week we replaced a sunroof motor in a 2002 Range Rover, and the part as a Dealer item cost $450. So-- if you can find good used parts from a dismantler such as Roverland in Florida, or Specialized British in California---that is the way to go.

Regards,

Geoman

Thanks for the help...I found a source from the previous owner and ordered the parts. They are coming from a wrecked truck in Va. I was told to make VERY certain that I keep the rails "lubed" otherwise I would be looking at doing this again. So I have noted to self....

The parts should arrive this week and I have my weekend planned to get all back together and working correctly.

Again, thanks for the advise and recommended places to look.
