Can a leaking sunroof cause the 3 amigos?
Thankfully, I found your forum and the first post I encountered was the statement that the most frequently asked questions on the Discovery were about leaking sunroofs and the “three amigos”. These are exactly my problemsbut being a newbie to your site I went througha bunchof posts on these subjects but still wonder about a few things. So here’s my story:
Wet dash #1-radio went out but dried out-OK (I am referring to the portion of the dash with the radio, climate control and the cluster of buttons for hill decent etc., including the shift console)
Wet dash #2-ABS light came on but went away-OK, checked sunroof drain hoses-one clogged and sunroof motor not working, taped sunroof for a temporary fix.
Wet dash #3-all three lights came on and didn’t go away, to dealer who re-set fault codes and stated that I needed a right front sensorharness for only 2 grand. Decided that ABS was highly overrated but lights now off and radio permanently set to one station at one volume, caulked sunroof tight with100% black silicon.
Wet dash #4-all three lights back on, wondering if water can travel uphill, replaced radio with a used one off eBay, draped garbage bag over dash, went back to dealer who still wants 2 grand and stands by the original progonsis but suggests that it's not water on the dash and could be moisture in the air, explained that it has recently been in rain when the sunroof did not leak and the lights did not come on, wrote this post. Oh, and the heater fan has decided to come on after a 10 minute wait but only on high and if it is below 40 degrees outside. In 10 more minutes I can actually adjust it to low or medium. Humm?
So I am wondering:
What’s with the sunroof?
Is this all coincidental?
I recently replace all rotors and front pads ( Lockheed) but they squeal (in spite of gobs ofpad grease) so could my problem be caused by brake dust as some have suggested?
If the ABS light is on (or off) do I have ABS? I can check this at our first snowfall but I am interested anyway.
Would anybody like to trade a Series II (with a good frame) even up for my Disco with illuminated yellow interior lights?

2 grand to change a right front harness! The dealer is trying to steal your money.I paid less then $300. to have mine change from a small Land Rover/euro car repair shop. Find a good L.R. shop, (not the dealer) and have them read the codes and tell you what the problem is. There are some sunroof drains under the rig in the transmission tunnel area that need to be unclogged. Stick a piece of wire up there.

Your sunroof leak isn't related to the 3 amigos. It's probably the sensor, though it's not a $2K job. Should be more like $400-$500. Are there any indy Rover shops in your area? Maybe a piston is stuck after doing your rotors causing the squeal. Brake dust can fowl the sensors, especially if they are cheap pads. The Lockheeds should be fine, do you know which brand was on before?
The drains on the bell housing are for the a/c, not the sunroof. Mine are clogged all the time, and I'm looking into getting some tube to extend where the nipple sits. It will also keep the passenger side from draining directly onto the drive shaft.
I would look for a leaking windshield. The sunroof shouldnt leak onto the dash.
If your ABS light is on then you have no ABS at the wheel that is mailfunctioning.
So if the right front sensor is bad, the light will come on but the other three wheels will still have ABS.

Incorrect, if you have faults logged in the antilock braking system, the system will disable itself, allowing only normal braking, and no abs ability, as the ecu is unable to determine correct wheel speed.
Thank you all for your input. I going to throw this out. If I got water on the dash especially around the hill decent switch (which I believe is part of the braking system) do you think this coulld trigger the three amigos? Anyway I am going to get the faults cleared, cover the dash until I figure howthe sunroof isleaking, and see what happens.
