With key in ignition and brake depressed, I cannot get the shifter out of park.

Default Some progress......

It has to be a loose or disconnected shifter cable because I was able to manipulate the cable under the car into neutral (shifter in the cabin stayed in park) and start the car. However, if I moved the shifter out of park (the little button that the brake is supposed release is now not working so I had to depress it myself) and pulled down on the shifter the tranny would move down accordingly i.e shifter pulled to neutral, tranny and little red indicator on shifter panel would move down to 3rd. It has to be the cable - is it loose and how do I tighten or fix it?

Get out from under the truck and start reading the hundreds of posts on this and other Rover sites about what is wrong and the $25 fix.

Mike-

I have read countless number of post from simply a fuse, to new linkage, to new cable shifter, to new tranny, to bad solenoid. I don't know what the $25 answer is because the post do not seem (to me) specific to my issue. Obviously I am wrong.

Went out and checked the brake lights, one side works. Some post have talked about a brake switch above the brake pedal. Where is that located? I do not have the owners manual, all stolen some time back. It is a 99 LR Disco II.

You need a new brake light switch, you can get one from a local autoparts store.
The location will not be in the owners manual.
It is located right behind/above the brake pedal, when you push the brake pedal you push the brake light switch.

Normally it is the brake switch but if that were the case neither brake light will work.
Send me your tele number and I'll call you
