Default Can't get the check engine light to come on.

I'm getting nervous. Since I met my wife in 2012 and her Disco, it's come on and off from time to time. The last time was when a plug wire was fried then the cats got fried and before that the head gaskets. Since I've been on this forum and learned tons, I can't get the CEL to come on. This freaks me out.

I turn the key and the light comes on then goes off. I've tried all the things that usually make it come on, like driving the truck. No luck.

Does this condition usually last long? Thanks.

It's usually self-correcting, although my truck's exhibited the same symptom for a little over a year now. I know it's disconcerting but you can learn to live with it. In my case the condition was offset somewhat by an SRS light and wiring problem and a thermostat going bad, plus the need to replace the motor mounts, but I know those just aren't the same as the SES light. Especially a flashing SES light.

Hmmn.

I'm stumped. Never come across that before.

Good luck.

Pull the MAF plug out & leave gas cap loose, then drive it around, and you will be happy again,!!

I tried that. I even switched all the coil wires around randomly and removed 4 plugs. It just keeps running smooth. Very uncharacteristc of a Rover. Cheap 87 octane gas too.Not sure if it's safe to drive without the light on.

Wow Jamie. I wish I had that issue. I have a blue spot in my vision from the years of driving with my SES light on.

Your Rover loves you. Be happy. Mine screws me every chance it gets.

I started this comical thread in part because it does make me nervous with no SEL light on. Here's why: I married my wife about 3 years ago. We've been together 4 years. That's how long I've known the Disco. My wife bought it new in California in 2002. Babied it, drove it to Texas in 2012 with about 145k on the dial.

Let's say 2013-2014 I just occasionaly rode in it. Had a u-joint replaced by a shop in the front prop shaft, and managed to replace the valve cover gaskets myself. I knew very little about Rovers.

Everything changed in 2015-2016. Instead of wanting to sell it in the fall of 2016 we decided to keep it and invest what it needed. Basically she'd get a new truck and I would essentially be handed this truck. My initial investment was about $1500. Part was having the head gaskets done (she paid half) and the rest odds and ends.

Long story short, 2015-2016 was the year of the SEL. Head gasket, wires, coils, wrong oil grade, leaks, radiator (i broke the plastic nipple), cats, t-stat, hoses, tranny kit, dif oil- all my blood sweat and tears. I did so much work on this truck and now it runs like a top. No leaks, no drips, no lights.

Scares the crap out of me because i'm just waiting for "what next". Lol. It's bittersweet. I know more so now I can do more, but I don't want to do more. Freaks me out man! :-)
