Talking case of the drips

I know this has been addressed in other posts, but i couldn't seem to find one of them. So if this is repetitive please excuse me. I rarely drive my 03 DII on the interstate, but a few days ago I drove 60 miles on the interstate to the airport, and another 60 back at 70-80mph. The rover then sat in the drive for a couple of days. As I backed out of the drive o take my brother back to the airport (another interstate trip) I noticed 8 or 10 small drips on the concrete(I hate that). After some quick examination I found that it seems to be coming from the tcase cover. I have done everything on the recommended 60k service with the exception of the tcase service(I did check the fluids though). This is the first case of the drips my rover has had. I'm wondering if the increased driving speeds caused the sudden leakage or is it possible this is a sign i have damaged something? I went yesterday and bought some white shepard, but is that enough to stop the leaking in most cases? The rover still drives great. But i can't stand leaks. What would the rover experts on here do in my situation? It seems to be leaking from the "service" plate located on the bottom side. The one with ten bolts in it. If i were to drain it and pull the cover, would silicone on the old gasket be good fix or just a waist of time? And finally, Am I going to get 10 mpg no matter what? I read the sticky post that said 16-18 highway. NOT IN THIS ROVER. Thanks for all the help. This is a great forum. Keep it up moderators.
Phil

I've read with jealousy of others saying they get 14-18mpg. But I'm in the same boat as you - 10mpg. Doesn't matter if it's strictly city, strictly highway, or a mix between the two; I get no more, and no less than 10-11mpg. I took the thing up to the mountains about 3 weeks ago. Total round trip of about 200 miles, which included about 40 miles of city/town driving, 60 miles of highway driving, 75 miles of mountain driving, and 25 miles of off road trail driving. Final tally? 10 mpg. On a 98% all hwy, cruise control set @ 70mph, trip between Seattle and Vancouver back in August? 11mpg.

have you givin the rig a tune up lately?

i drove to tacoma and back on wed night it was 53 miles each way to the house i went to. so for 106 miles round trip i averaged 17.6 mpg at 65mph on the cruise control.

you should easily be getting that

I did the 60k tune up 5k ago. That included cleaning the induction. I run 93 octane and drive slower than my grandmother. No help what so ever. Just curious if this is normal. Seems like I'm getting mixed reveiws. Some say they have the same mileage, others say they get much better. I get 225 miles per tank. Period. I've used all the recommended plugs, wires, etc. Maybe I should look behind me for the trail of gas.lol.
Thanks hilltoppersx. I was just tying to be lazy for the day about the gasket. But I just replaced it and all is well.

As a daily driver I get 15 with my DI.
I have gotten as much as 24mpg on a 700 mile trip.
The trick is cruise control, windows up and driving no faster than 65mph.

yep. also i keep my tires pumped up to about 40psi on the streets and i deflate them at the trail head. then i plug my little pump in and re inflate before hitting the highway.

also always use synthetics in the diffs etc.

hmmmm im trying to think of what could be killing your mpgs so much

I also run my rubber's at 40psi, all dino lubes for me though as I change them once a year because I wade and the last time I used full syn I got water in the rear diff and wasted some serious $$$.
Iridium plugs help, good plug wires too.
One thing that is often overlooked is the gas that you use.
make sure that you are using premium and also make sure that you are using good gas.
When it comes to gas you get what you pay for.
I use Shell 99% of the time and it does not have Ethanol in it.

So here is what you need to do/check.
Grade/brand of gas.
Tune up, air filter, tire PSI, roll up the windows, A/C on or off makes no difference (my 24mpg was in the summer with the A/C on), type of tire (off road tires get less MPG than street tires), remove the roof rack, remove any extra weight (do you really need to carry all of those tools just in case?), drive with a light foot, (you dont have to be the first one to the next stop light), anticipate your stops, the fewer times you stop the better, combine your trips (a hot engine gets better MPG than a cold one).
I cant really think of anything else right now.

And dont say that you cant drive 65 because it takes to long because a 200 mile trip at 70mph takes 2.85 hours and at 65 takes 3.07 hours.
So that is a difference of .22 hours, so 22 min longer at 65 than at 70.
But you get 17mpg instead of 10.
So at 17mpg that is 11.76 gal of gas and at $3.00 per gallon thats $35.28.
At 10mpg you will use 20gal of gas and at $3.00 per gallon that is $60.
Is 22 min worth $24.72?
I NEVER drive faster than 65, EVER. (unless I need to pass to get out of the way but then its only for a mile or so)
Remember...speed kills, or is it crack kills? I dont remember.

I also have an '03 Discovery, but my mileage is a very consistent 12mpg city and 16mpg highway (I typically drive 75mph on TX freeways). I've seen 17mpg in areas where the speed limit is 55-60mph.

I'm by no means an expert, but I noticed in your signature that you have a 2" lift, a roof rack, ladder, winch, upgraded bumper, etc. The added weight and wind resistance of these items I'm guessing are also have a negative impact on your mpg...?

Anyway, those are my thoughts
