CDL in a 2002 Disco II?
So I am thinking about my project for this winter break. By the end of the summer I will have done all my items on my to do list (head gaskets, hub, suspension, brakes, 3 Amigos, rear windshield motor, new tires). If nothing catastrophic happens this leaves me with my wish list. #1 is a CDL. What is the best option for a lockable center differential with a '02 DII? I assume I have to buy a whole new differential.

So do you need to swap out the whole transfer case or just a part of it? I figure I may come out even if I buy the DI part and sell my DII part or trade it in.

You can do either.
Swap out the non CDL half of the t-case and replace it with the half of a CDL equipped t-case.
Or you can swap out the whole thing.
Start shopping around for t-cases and see what route you want to take.
The CDL part for your t-case is about $330+shipping and a $50 core charge.
I do not know what a used t-case goes for.

I kept my quiet, non-leaking transfer case and replaced the front out put housing with a locking one from toddcosuspensions.com. Todd is a great guy to work with and walked me through the install. Disco Mike was the one that told me I should keep my t-case since it is in great condition. The instructions for this are in a sticky at the top of the Discovery section so you know what you will be getting into if you go that option.
As you know the transfer case is made up of three sections. front housing, main case, and rear housing. The internal tid bits are the same through out all LT230 cases except what is in the front out put housing for non-locking types like the 2003 Disco

The green components are what is inside every locking t-case. If you don't have these bits, Land Rover only gave you # 38. The green components enables the transfer case to lock. # 9 and #10, front output shaft and dog clutch respectively are what make it possible. # 21 is the fork that slides the # 10 onto # 9. The nipple component we all know is 36, 34, and 33. 33 pushes 21 which slides 10 onto 9 and you are locked! This action is the same thing that occurs when we go from low to hi range. See below.

When selecting high or low range, # 6 and #7 push # 5 (hi/low selector sleeve) onto either the dark green part of high range gear #9 or low range gear # 3 via # 4 which is the low range gear hub.
