Default Changing TC fluid

Hey all, changed the fluid on the front and rear axels and was making my way to the TC. Took the advice to check and ensure you can get the fill plug off before draining and i can't seem to get my wrench in there. The Emergency break drum and (I assume) the cable is in the way. Do I need to take them off to do this or is there a tool that will allow me to get to the fill plug.

I know its a basic question but want to take care of this tomorrow so any help, as always, is appreciated.

Default TC case fill plug

I had Midas bust mine loose with an impact wrench when they checked my brakes for free. It was still a bear. I used a 1/2" 3" long extension on a breaker bar and slowly but shurly it came out. The E-Brake cable is some what in the way but a 3" extension wobble can help too...just keep tapping it with a hammer on the back of your socket to keep it seated in the fill plug...it wants to wiggle out. That sucker has about 1" of threads on it!

While you are in there remove the large inspection plate after draining it. Feel around in the bottom for metal pieces. I used the Permatex "Good Stuff" to reseal my inspection plate. Has not leaked drip of gear oil since. Gotta love how it smells!

You can move the cable out of the way a little.
I pull mine out and then slide my ratchet in between the parking brake cable and t-case, once it is loose I remove the ratchet and unscrew it by hand.

Thanks Boss...going to take this on tomorrow so let you know how it goes. Will take off the inspection plate as well...see what it looks like in there. The axels were pretty dirty so I imagine this one hasn't been touched yet either. Next up transmission fluid/filter...

Default TC Change

Just an update and a question...

the wobbler extension worked like a charm, paired it with a 3 in extension and everything went as expected. Thanks for the advice.

Now the question...

the fluid came out pretty dark and smelling pretty bad, i checked the drain magnet and it had the normal goo on there but there were a couple of pieces of metal. no more than a milimeter long. I didn't take off the plate as I didn't have enough time. Should i be concerned? and once i fill it back up do i need to drive it and then top it off (similar to transmission)?

As always thanks for the assistance.

Default TC case fill

As long as it dripped a 1/2" bead of gear oil down from the fill plug when you were filling your fine. No need to top off again. I was reading in the other post that Disc Mike said this "75W/140 for the extra wear protection and in some cases, quieter gears but always a synthetic since that is what all D2's came out with".

Here is the post with pictures:
https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=27159

I currently have Lucas in mine which in not Synthetic. Opps, I will switch over to Mobil 75W/140 on my next oil change.

Crawled under my Rover today and looks like mine is leaking again...Must be the other inspection plate. Dang! Time to swap out this transfer case with the CDL one I have and hook up my shifter. Going to need a home made lift for that little monster.

You are fine, gear lube smells bad when used because it has a very high zinc content to protect the gears.
