Default Changing Transmission Fluid

I am slowly and ignorantly going through Mike's 60k service list. My 99 D1 has 120,000. I had a shop do the induction cleaning, i changed the plugs and wires and cleaned throttle body myself. Added the fuel additive Now i'm on the transmission, t/case and the differentials. Are there any tricks and tips that the Rave manual doesn't mention. I've tried to find some in a past thread and i couldn't. Should i pull the pan and clean, how about the filter and gasket. While i'm down there i want to make sure i'm getting everything done. Probably has never been done before. While we're at it, any tricks/tips on the t/case and diffs? i've heard of people not being able to get all of the fluids out by just releasing the plugs in these jobs. Do i need any kind of pump for any of these jobs? Or do i just follow the Rave manual. Thanks

Jason

With that mileage you have 2 options on the tranny, pull the crossmember, maybe move the "Y" pipe so you can replace the filter or just do 2 or fill drain and refills with out a filter.
Send me your number and I'll call you if you have questions.

I just went through the bottom end fluid changes in the last couple weeks - try searching a little harder =>. There IS a wealth of information buried in the threads.

For what I can remember off the top of my head:
- Always open the fill plugs first before you drain in case the fill plugs get stuck. The toughest one to crack open is the t-case. There are multiple posts on what people do to open that.
- You should be able to get almost all of the fluid out of the t case and diffs. It's the tranny that only drains about half of what's in it.
- Yes you'll want a pump for all the fills. The diffs may be doable without a pump but since you'll need that for the t-case you may as well start with one.

got the transmission fluid changed. sort of. only took about 6 quarts of new fluid. 5 quarts of transmission fluid and a bottle of lucas. what's that all about? didn't get to the t/case or diffs this weekend. I'm leaking fluid from my steering somewhere. and that took a bunch of time to investigate. man it's hard to tell where the leak is. i'm leaving a good puddle overnight though. steering is pretty loose. Also Just wanted to say thanks for the tips.

You might want to power scrub the p/s hose/pump area top and bottom so you can better find that leak.

My bet is on the pump fitting that the low pressure line from the reservior attaches to - low pressure line with a constant jet of forced air from the fan to all over the DS engine compartment when the engine is running. Ask me how I know?

A new clamp cured mine.
