Default Check Engine Light

Hi Lads,
Well...It finally happened. I started up the Rover yesterday morning and the "service engine" light came on.The truck still runs fine and everything looks great under the hood....could it be that the K&N filter finally buggered up the MAF? The truck is a 2001 with 44,000 kilometers(about 25,000 miles)on the clock. The engine has really been treated right,so I can't see anything else that would trigger a sensor. Any thoughts? The truck is going in on Monday morning for a look see......

After all the posts on K&N filters, you are now wondering!!!
Go get your codes read this morning and get back to us with the 4 digit fault code numbers.
By the way, MAFs have gone up nearly $60 in the last couple of months.

You just need to have the codes read and see what they say. If it is running fine then there isint much we can tell you.

I know,I know....I should have listened!.....I'm gonna feel pretty stupid if it turns out to be the MAF.I can't get the codes read until Monday when Dealer looks at it.I really don't know anyone else here in Ottawa who could read the codes on my truck...or would I want anyone else to monkey with it.The service department at the LR Dealer here in Ottawa is pretty good, and they always treat me fair(the service manager lives just two blocks from me).I was going to go in next week anyway to have the driveline inspected(I like to keep an eye on the axles and u-joints).I'll get back to you with the results.....after I drive a steak through the heart of that K&N filter!!!

Go to any local auto parts store, they will read your codes for free.
As for seeing the dealer regarding your drive shaft, all they will do is sell you another one with out grease fittings for a fortune.
If you can't find a small shop to rebuild it shout and I will give you some options.

O.K Lads....lesson learned! Well, just got back from dealing with my Service Engine light issue and it turned out to be a contaminated MAF sensor. Instead of going to the dealer to have the problem diagnosed,I stopped in to see my friend Pierre at Pierre's Autocare here in Ottawa.I've known Pierre for years, and figured he would be able to give me an accurate diagnoses. Sure enough after reading the code,he opened the hood pulled out the K&N and said; "here's your problem"...."I don't know why people use these stupid things".He then cancelled the code, removed the MAF,cleaned it,reinstalled it and then told me to get the proper factory filter(which I did). The truck has been running like new ever since. So...o.k lads!....you were right....I was wrong. K&N's DO NOT work well in Land Rovers. Just FYI though, the MAF sensor CAN be cleaned if it's just contaminated and not fried. Pierre say's he has cheaned hundreds of them over the years. Spray electrical contact cleaner will work fine, but you will either have to carfully dry it with compressed air or allow ample evaporation time on the bench.Anyway,I should consider myself lucky that the MAF wasn't damaged.
