check engine light
Yes flashing means you for sure need to fix something. does that mean it expensive - no, though it could be. Cost is impossible to tell because we do not know if you can do repairs yourself or need to take it to the shop. I can tell you the stealership will prob charge you $125 just to hook her up to a diagnostic machine and then they will prob rape you to repair it on top of that. I had a cel and just went to autozone and bought a $84 dollar obd2 scanner. I cleared the code and it has never returned. The scanner can read, and clear them. It just gives you a code number like PO1123 or sim. You will then have to call the dealership repair center and ask them what that code translates to. It could be misfire or o2 sensor.... You then know what it is. Then clear it and see if it returns. If it does, then you know where to look first for repair and if you do take it in, you know if they are ripping you off. How is it running - is engine smooth does it smoke under load. It could be as simple as a crapped out spark plug or ignition wire or something worse. Good luck and I highly reccomend everyone getting a scanner if for no other reason than to prevent getting ripped off by repair shops - the code may not tell you the exact thing, but it will get you to the correct system so they cannot say " you need a new differential " or sim when it is really only need a tune up.
I have a 2001 Disco SE and it just hit 60k miles and the check engine light came on. Is this an automatic light that is just trying to get you in the shop or is it like some Ford vehicles where it will go off after a couple hundred miles?
there are two lights on the disco the check engineand service engine . The Check engine means something is wrong or was wrong - may still be. The service engine is the one to get you into the shop for routine service. Yep the check engine may not mean anything as sometimes sensors momentarily cause a false reading. No way to tell - best advice is to drop the $84 on the scanner and then you know by clearing it and seing if it returns. Otherwise, you run a distince possibility of getting bent over backward with no lube by the stealership - and they might not even smile at you
Anyone can use the scanner as it has two buttons on the one from autozone. it plugs into the diagnostic port that connects to your trucks' computer just as easily as plugging something into your home pc. Nothing you can break or damage by doing it yourself and then you know. You plug it in and turn your ignition key to aux ( do not start engine) and retrieve code. You have the option then to clear it. If you clear it and it returns, then you know it is for real and you can call to find out what code means. To get her scanned by a shop it costs $125 and can you trust them??? Austozone and checker scan for you too, but not sure if they will clear them as well - this is a free service, but the trouble is that the scaner will give you a code like PO1112, but it might not say what that means. You then call up rover and ask them. Not sure if the Haynes rover repair manual or cd has codes in it to reference, but someone can chime in on that.

The RAVE CD's have the codes in them. In addition, OBDII is a standard. You can get most of the codes from the web. I use this link: http://www.obdii.com/obdii.html , but there are numerous other sites.
