Default Check Engine Light On - No Codes

After our headgasket rebuild (97 Disco I), the CEL came on which would be expected with all the oil etc. in the engine. The Acctron scanner at Autozone showed no codes. Anybody seen this before? It runs great BTW.

Thanks,
Marv

There is a Check Engine Light and a Service Engine Soon light, two different meanings.
If you go to discoweb.org and click the tech tab, there is a write up on how to reset the emmission's reminder which is the SES light.

EDIT-Only the dealer can read SES codes.

if its red, then yes, its your maintenance reminder, if its amber you have a code, the trans can also turn on the mil, and not all generic scanners can read them

It's the amber check engine.

BTW went to the discoweb page but didn't see a tech tab. I just went to www.discoweb.org. Is there another URL?

No, you have the URL correct. It is along the top, under their banner, the tech tab is under the middle Disco.
With the amber CEL on you will get codes. Did the person at AutoZone have it set to LR? Was it plugged in all the way? I would go back and try again.

Default RE: Check Engine Light On - No Codes

For anybody that's interested, I upgraded my scanner hardware interface so it would talk ISO 9141 (Rover speak) and was able to reset the check engine light. There were no codes, which I know is strange. Being the electronics geek that I am, I charted the O2 sensors and MAF and they are all working great. Just knowing that will save me the cost of blindly replacing the sensors, which will more than pay for upgrading my interface and software. My old version just had an ELM interface which worked great for my Ford products but wouldn't talk to my Rovers or GM. The new one I bought works with everything. We were able to find a bad throttle position sensor on my daughters Bonneville yesterday. It was chugging on takeoff to the point I didn't want her to drive it until it was fixed. When we plotted the TPS sensor output it was jumping around when in idle position and steady when in a higher position. That confirmed that the wiring was OK and that the potentiometer on the TPS had a worn spot in the idle position. A trip to Autozone and $60 later it was fixed.

It really is great having real data to be able to troubleshoot a vehicle. With the computers on board anything else is just guessing. If anybody is interested in any details, just let me know.
