Chirping noise/ front wheels
Hello! I'm so excited about my " new " 1999 Disco II. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what the chirping noise is coming from my front wheels. I seem to notice it only after I've driven a short distance. The chirping speeds up as I do...any thoughts? Thanks for any advice...and thanks for this forum!!! - RoverRookie. PS - I've already changed the brakes to ceramic and all the rotors.
I don't know about your year of Disco, but when mine started chirping (when I was 250 miles from home) it meant my driveshaft was about to go. I got it replaced JUST IN TIME...it literally sounded like a bird chirping that got progressively louder after a few days and would speed up as I accelerated.
As Annie described if this is the noise that you are hearing STOP DRIVING THE TRUCK!!!!!
If your front driveshaft breaks you WILL be buying a new transmission.
You need to crawl under the truck and see if you have grease fittings on the driveshaft, BOTH ends.

I second what Spike said...don't drive it. The Disco gods must have been smiling down on me because I continued to drive it the 250 miles home and for a few days after until the chirp got super loud. Turns out it could have gone out at any time...
There are a few stories on here where it DID go out right when the chirp started...you just never know.
Spike: I take it ALL Disco IIs need the u-joints and center ball kit replaced???

Ah, okay. Then I think that would explain the problem...seems "chirping" is the key word that = driveshaft.
Edited to add: Then again...how the hell would I know?!?!? Haha...

All you have to do is crawl under the truck and count the number of grease fittings on the front drive shaft, should be 3 and a plug, if you only see one, go no farther, get back to us and I'll tell you how to take it off and engage your rear axle till you can get that shaft rebuilt.
I have a 2000 Disco with 126000 miles on it and it just started chirping and making a clunking noise when I shift to drive. It sounds like it could be the drive shaft too.
