Default CKP - Replace Before Failure?

My 2004 Disco is a daily driver. I put 50 miles a day on it going to and from work. I have some flexibility in my schedule but generally speaking, I need to have a vehicle I can count on to start up and run every morning. I got just about all the bugs worked out so I am trying to think about what I can do to be a bit proactive. I have read the CKP can fail without warning leaving you stranded. Does it make sense to proactively replace the CKP to head off a imminent failure?

In over 200k miles of ownership I've never had that fail.

Mine failed at 105K. I heard spraying cold water on the CKP can be a temporary fix if you have a sudden failure on the road.

I just carry one for that reason.

I think it's bizarre that a non-wear sensor with no moving parts has reports of failures.

*but yeah, I still replaced mine when I did my engine rebuild

Thanks guys. I should have replaced mine when I rebuilt the engine but I didn’t. I think I’d much rather replace it in my garage than on the trail so I will go ahead and swap it out.

And then keep the old one as a spare ...

Check out this thread from a year ago for a discussion of CKPS failure. It's not definitive but it's a good discussion, I think.

In the interim, I will add some of my leftover DEI heat barrier to protect it as heat looks like one of the failure modes.

Heat is definitely the failure mode. I wrap by cps sensor covers in aluminum foil inside and out for the same reason you put the heat shield on your floorboards.

i had one fail and leave me stranded. seems like a good idea to replace at $75 or so for the part.

My starter died while i was getting gas with 152k on the odo. original starter.

i also had a fuel pump die on me on a hot day at about 145k miles.
