Default Clunks when I shift into drive or reverse

Hi,

96 Discovery, when I shift into drive or reverse the car clunks. This only seems to make the noise when the car is warmed up, after I drive it for a long period of time.

The transmission is very smooth otherwise. Is this normal?

Thanks

Some clunks when shifting from P to D is normal as there can be a bit of slack in the driveline. Definitely check your driveshaft ujoints especially if they have not been greased regularly.

It seems to happen on a hill or on a level street. I will take it to the mechanic and have him look at the U joints. Will greasing the U joints take care of this if they arent too far gone?

Thanks again!

it's probably going to need more than just grease. Why don't ya crawler under it and see if there is any play in the ujoints? Owning a 14 year old rover is going to get REALLY expensive if you take it to the mechanic for every little thing.

I have similar issues, but it doesn't really matter the type of surface and it doesn't happen all of the time... When I had the truck up on a lift, I inspected the entire driveline and did notice that the front shaft did have a little bit of play (rotational, not forward-backward). I keep the joints lubed religiously since Land Rover replaced the front driveshaft some 20K miles ago with a stock shaft. Interestingly enough it does have 3 lube fittings in the front driveshaft. Maybe time to replace it?

I really don't know what I'm looking for to inspect the U joints. I've replaced them before on a truck I used to have. I just need to know what to look for. Also, on the rear shaft, that rubber thing: it doesn't have any cracks, but I haven't replaced yet in the 70K miles I have put on the truck over the years. Just rolled 100K the other day...

Any information would be great!!
