Clutch fan exploded
+1 on doing an electric fan. I'll be doing this soon.
However, I have an E36 BMW and they're prone to the same failure. Replaced that one several years ago with an electric fan and the car runs cooler with no issues.

My fan, clutch and water pump were brand new when it exploded two weeks ago, same thing on my sons bmw so i wasn't about to put another mechanical fan on again.
Still haven't hooked up my scan gauge but will post results in a couple days when I do

So decided to resurrect my thread from a few months back. So driving to work today same thing happened again. Load pop, dent in hood, plastic out the bottom of car. This happened while accelerating and maybe 3k rpms. I was on the highway but was able to get off on an exit ramp, into a parking lot and wait for tow truck and temps got to about 220 before I shut her off. Pop the hood and sure enough no blades on fan, upper hose, fan shrouds and thermostat all destroyed. Radiator fins in about a 2 inch square are damaged but think it might be ok. So not as bad as last time but still has me baffled.
So less than 3 months and less than 500 hundred miles is when I had to put in brand new clutch and fan, used upper and lower shroud (with clips), new thermostat along with air box, MAF, and radiator. So last time i thought it might be just old fan (was on a new clutch) or that the bottom shroud came loose (i had it zipped tied since i lost clips). But this time it was new fan and the bottom shroud is still attached at the bottom. Upper shroud is actually still attached at its 4 points as well. I had it towed home and at work now so havent looked into much except while waiting on tow truck but trying to figure out if anything else.
I was thinking maybe motor mounts are completely shot as not sure I have really every paid attention to them but thatsone thing I am going to check, but I guess that could give engine some room to move more than normal. My other thought is, has anyone heard of the thermostat housing exploding? These are the genuine 180t stats (the grey ones). Why I ask is in both cases the casing is split perfectly at the seam on the middle horizontal line. I assumed last time the blades hit it and still kind of assuming that this time but throwing it out there. My last thought is somehow I am getting thermostat in wrong position and its getting pulled into fan blades. I am pretty sure I was very careful with that this last time but maybe still my fault.
Was thinking maybe time to try electric fan and in line thermo mod.

Finally getting around to fixing the car. So looks like the bearing in water pump had gone bad and had a pretty noticeable wobble in the pulley. Pissed at myself for not checking last time and for getting a cheap water pump last summer. Order an Airtex this go around. Had a done that from the beginning I would have a almost a grand less in repairs. Lesson to anyone else who reads this. Don't skimp on water pump

2004 Discovery, 94K miles. Mine flew apart too, but not with quite as much damage as yours. What I learned happened, is that my water pump bearings bit the dirt, so the water pump impeller was unable to turn, as it was jammed against the aluminum housing inside the water pump area. Once jammed, the fan belt, from engine power, sawed its way beyond the plastic guard, and belt flew off, jamming against the fan blades, causing the blades to fly apart, etc. AND, I had been checking the water pump too, over time, periodically, for wear, as best I could, because I had no idea when or if it had ever been changed previously---now after having learned all this, I think it was never changed in life of vehicle. I now am convinced that when water pump gets around the 100,000 mile mark, or preferably a bit earlier, change your water pump, or risk this happening to your beloved Rover. Once the belt is off, the engine is going to heat quickly, and if you try your luck too much; let it overheat too much, you will likely crack the aluminum housing between the cylinder sleeves and the water jacket of engine block---that has happened numerous times before on these engines, and it for sure will happen numerous times again, so beware! My engine did not overheat, because I stopped faster than you can say "Rover," for I know too well what can happen when these engines overheat.
Wow, really sh*t luck. I'm glad you figured out what it was and that there wasn't too much damage.
If you're looking to go electric, I figured I'd throw out that I did a write up on an electric conversion for like (I think) $70-80. I'd post a link, but I'm on my phone right now. Figured that might be helpful.

There have been a few threads over the years about crap water pumps loosing the bearing. My DII shortly after I got it had the water pump bearing let go. I got lucky and caught it fairly early. It was a brit part still had a parts sticker on it....
I replaced it with a Airtek. I've always had good luck with the quality of their parts 30K miles of happy motoring and counting.
I am tempted to put a electric fan on it though after reading a few threads on the fan coming apart.

Yeah i thought about trying to go electric and read a few post about the conversion. Maybe I found the wrong threads but didn't sound like anyone had perfected it yet. As in in town temps were better but highway temps weren't quite there. I got the car shut down and according to ultragauge I got to around 215 or so, so not to concerned I damaged anything. Car ran in the low 190's pretty much all the time before this happened so hopefully it stays in that same range
Only thing I wont be fixing asap is the hood. Its now has two pretty good dents that are outward. One actually chipped some paint so going to touch that up. Body wise mines in pretty good shape but adding a few dents to it just adds some character

There's the link to my fan conversion. Temps have been great, lower than with my mechanical fan, and quieter too. Also an MPG increase.
215 is too warm to be at regularly, that will cause premature HG failure. I get nervous over 205 and straight scared over 210.
