Coil packs -- which to buy
To add some details yes I got the check engine light. It flashed a few times as the mis-firing was happening, then went solid hence why I pulled the codes. I am running Bosch+4 and Kingsbourne 8mm wires that I put in Feb of 2013 with 123,5xx miles and I am now at 137k miles. The fact that it threw the code for plug 5 and 8 and the same time is why why I was leaning towards coil pack. I checked both wires just to make sure nothing looked out of place and all looked ok. I still haven't pulled the plugs to visually inspect but will get around to it eventually.
I've got the 4.6, but it's far from stock. Shaved heads, cam, Port and polish, intake, exhaust, the whole 9 yards.
Hate to break it to you Mike, but thats where she dinod at. 0-60 in 9.1 seconds the last time I checked, though I've gone up a couple inches in tire size since then and that was a better than average tank of gas.
Edit: I just saw I was 10 off, typo. She dinod at 220. Still though, not shabby by any means.

Sorry for the thread Jack OP
Oh yea, far from stock. Sorry fellas. I agree about the sleeves, but wasn't in the budget, though no extra heat except at idle and only about 2 degrees more.
Back to the coils, could it be a wiring issue? I agree, I typically think of coils as either working or not. Could, perhaps, one of the wires that plug into the coil pack be broken or perhaps one of the coils not plugged in well? I mean, I would definitely try replacing the coils atleast with a cheap set, but this kinda sounds like it could be a broken wire or a short.
Just a thought. Seems unlikely since those wires don't move about, but I'd atleast do a visual inspection on them to see if perhaps the insulation got melted somehow or if you can see some kind of dry rot.

I'm posting here so maybe someone can help out. Does anyone know the specs on the bolts that hold the coil bracket onto the IM? I checked the RAVE and all it gave was torque settings. I'm replacing my ignition leads and discovered that whoever was poking around there last didn't properly secure the top 2 bolts on the flanged side of the bracket. I'm guessing they either dropped them or were just lazy, but in any case I don't want my coil packs bouncing around!

FWIW I have been using the chaepie coils for 30K on my 4.0 and never had an issue with them. I found this thread because I am going to order some new ones for my 4.6.... since you haven't gotten a specific answer I'm going to get the cheapies (allmakes).
Alex, you could check your wiring harness to the coils but I don't believe there is any way to inspect the coil packs or repair them; I agree that they are either working or not (if properly wired up, which, as you know, can be confusing and is a physically tortured process).
