Default Confused about coil spring wear

I've been calling the rover shops around town to get bids on having my shocks and coil springs replaced. (02 Disco, 140k) To my surprise, many of the shops first asked me if I was sure that the springs needed to be replaced.

I guess I had just assumed that 12 year old shocks would need to be replaced...but apparently not?

Anyone have an opinion on this?

you are correct if you have 12 year old spring then you should replace them with the shocks. putting on new shock with worn sagging spring will only ruin the shocks, jmo

Thanks, that's pretty much my opinion too. I just need to figure out what springs and shocks to buy now. I don't do any real four wheeling to speak of and have no interest in a lift. On the other hand, I do have an ARB bumper with a winch up front which I use around the property.

Heavy duty springs for the front?

Springs don't actually 'wear' per se they just lose some of their rebound capability, beter known as becoming tired with age/use. Shocks also lose some of their damping abilities as I found out when I have just changed my D2 11 year old springs and shocks on a TD5 (slightly different springs though to the V8) The difference is magical particularly with changing all the engine and gearbox mountings as now it's quieter and far less vibes on the road.

Im surprised these rover shops dont want to improve your ride, and make some money?

Your shocks NEED to be replaced...140k on them?

You WILL notice a difference with new coils, they have been supporting 5k pounds for many years.. Purchase a set of medium duty coils since you have a steel bumper and work around the property..MO
