Default Considering some Winches. What is the best value for about $550

Well I've been working some 55 hours weeks saving some coin for a winch this summer. I'd like to stay in the $500 range. I've been looking on Amazon.com.
Is Synthetic rope worth the extra dollars, even though it comes in blue & Orange and is really cool looking. Just curious? Probably not much chance the cable will break, but you probably get style points for pulling your friend out with a orange winch rope that will not snap and cut his legs off.

Here are the 2 winches I am considering.
Smittybilt 98281 XRC 8 Comp Series Black Winch with Synthetic Rope and Aluminum Fairlead

Amazon.com: Smittybilt 98281 XRC 8 Comp Series Black Winch with Synthetic Rope and Aluminum Fairlead: Automotive

Superwinch 1510200 LP10000 Series Winch

Amazon.com: Superwinch 1510200 LP10000 Series Winch: Automotive

Both look to be pretty good prices. The Superwinch posting on Amazon has a good chart showing Line pull/layers/FPM. I think you should be able to locate a similar chart for the Smittybilt and compare the two...

Avoid smittybilt. I bought the XRC8000 for a jeep YJ and the winch was a china manufactured pos....

500 dollar budget you say?

Amazon.com: WARN 26502 M8000 8000-lb Winch: Automotive

Go with the best.

Synthetic rope tends to be lighter also which helps with suspension load.

Thanks guys, I'm leaning toward the SuperWinch LP10000. Anyone know if its built in the USA?

keep on saving, dont buy a cheap winch if you plan on using it, if you need to pull out your Land Rover out of a mud hole a cheap one will over heat, and most dont come with over heat protector, and a remote controll as well as good plenatery gears, and the housing are not as strong, also you should try to get one that can pull double what your Land Rover weights.Spend at least $800.00 remember you pay for what you get.Look out for a used one, you can buy rebuild kits for them, just make sure the housing and gears aret damaged. Good luck!

I thought SuperWinch was a good brand. Curb weight of the Discover is about 5000lbs, this winch is a 10,000 winch. Is Warn really worth the money, when I will not be using it on daily basis. Maybe 3-5 times a month at most. But i know when I need it needs to be reliable. So does anyone have a SuperWinch how do they like it.

The Warn winch that sloan mentioned is the way to go. It's a no brainer. It only cost around $100 more than the SuperWinch. The Warn winch is the most well know and is considered one of the best if not the best. Parts are probably easier to get if you ever need then.

Harbor Freight just put out a new brand of winches called "Bad Lands". Here is the link:

9000 lb. Electric Winch with Automatic Brake

Just kidding. I love Harbour Freight, but I wouldn't trust that thing on the front of my truck when I would really need it. I wonder who makes their winches? I have been trying to find out who makes their opther power tools without success.

BTW - Keep checking Craig's List. I have seen a ton of winches pop up on there. I saw the Superwinch you listed on there for $350 used not too long ago.

Yeah, I saw that winch on the front cover a few weeks ago in the HF fliyer. Its not that inexpensive for a 9000 winch, when you factor in eBay and Amazon deals.

After some research I'm leaning toward the Warn:
