Considering some Winches. What is the best value for about $550

I would pony on up for a 12k Warn. My GVWR is well over 6k, it couldn't hurt, and if I have it STUCK stuck, I don't know about a 9k not snapping. It may be fine with just 9k, but I'd be more comfortable with a 12.

Here is what I ended up getting. $494 free shipping from Performance Auto Parts and Truck Accessories
Smittybilt XRC Comp 10,000 pound with syn line.

I got it in the mail yesterday and it looks nice. Only 65 pounds for a 10,0000 pound winch with synthetic line.

Go a different direction, go on Craigs list and find yourself a "GOOD" Warn winch, one that is 6 to 10 years old with a 9000 capacity, buy it for cheap, go thru it, clean it up, install some good rope, not by color but quality and you will have a far better winch then the cheap crap that is now being sold, and it won't come from China.

Yeah Disco Mike,
I had been looking on Criags List for over a year willing to buy a used Warn. Even to drive 2-3 hours any direction. Every one wanted $600 - 1000 for used junky rusted winch. I know Smittybilt is probably made in China, but from the looks of it new in the box this XCR 10 is a nice winch. Of course time will tell. I got a $800 MSRP 10,0000 pound winch for $494 free shipping, I'm happy with my purchase, I guess thats all that counts. The synthetic line and 65lbs weight sealed the deal for me. Why have a 100lbs winch on the tip of your bumper, when you can save 40 pounds or more.

Just don't get that Smitty under water.....I did...and it flopped like Labron James in the 4th quarter....lol

It's from China, so you will have to baby it. Do this, remove the gear cover and apply some good water proof grease to all the gears. That's a good mod to do on those winches. The other would be moving the solnoid/electronics box up higher in the engine compartment, but you will need some wiring extension for that.

Thanks Sloan,
I will lube up the new winch gears next time I do my drive shaft at the oil change.
Here are some pictures of winch install today. It went really smooth till I didnt have a 8mm bolt to secure the positive terminal to the battery cable. The factory rover battery terminal has a tapped 8mm hole perfect to secure the winch electric cable. Just need a bolt from the local hardware store.
