Yes, sometimes, cleaning them, if done properly, can help but not all the time.
I used an aftermarket and it did work. It was on a Discovery II. If the original MAF sensor is really off and you replace it, the computer is going to need to be reset, regardless of what MAF is put on it. Until the computer stops trying to compensate for the original air flow problem (or perceived air flow problem), it's still going to register as problem MAF.

You can say I'm completely wrong all you want, I've seen it work. I'd be willing to put one on my own truck just to make sure. If it can't work, then I should end up with a service engine light. I just happen to have a new aftermarket MAF laying around.

Discovery SE7, would you mind popping in the aftermarket MAF and see if it works, and report back. I'd love to see that myth about OEM MAFs put to rest. A lot of times, these guys get it in their head that their way is the only way because it worked for them (I also noticed a change in opinion today about cleaning the MAF, but that's for another day). I was told a million times not to put an aftermarket MAF in my SHO, but after 2 OEM's crapped out on me within 80,000 miles, I put in an aftermarket, and the car has run great the last 50,000.

Will do. I should have time to get it done next week. I'll post as soon as I get it put in.

Hi Rover Girl,
You can get CRC sensor cleaner for MAF's at any autoparts store.
Make sure it is the CRC sensor cleaner. That will clean the carbon off of a hot wire in the MAF.
If your Rover is not idling well, a BAD MAF could cause it.
The IAC - Idle Air Control may be just fine.
Replace one part at a time.
Post your codes here.
You can get an OBD II scanner at the autoparts store.
Connect it to the connector under the dash - you can pretty much put your feet in where you drive.
Then where your ankle is - go straight up and you'll see a black plug.
Put in the OBD II scanner there and pull out the codes from your Rover's ECM computer.
Beats the dealer.
Then, put the codes here on this BB and the kind people here will help
Be well,
J
