Coolant Leak, then no Coolant Leak? Any Logical Explaination?

2002 Disco II, 122k.
I had this issue, it turned out to be a crack in the plastic 3-way joint between the heater hose and thermostat. When the engine got very hot, say 200F the crack would open up and spew out the coolant, but would then re-seal when the pressure went down, but the engine would overheat. I went 'round and 'round with this thing until finally I pulled the hoses off to check for splits and found this crack. When I tugged on it a little bit, it broke in two. My recommendation is to check hoses regularly and replace them at recommended intervals, which I think is about every 50K miles.
