Default Crank Position Sensor

Does anyone have any idea how to test a Crank Position Sensor on a 2002 Disco?

Oh and I pulled these codes today. P1415 P1590 The SES light was not on but i just felt like checking and there they were. Anyone tell me what they are?

SES means Service Engine Soon and CEL means Check Engine Light, two different things.
I dont think that you can check a crank sensor, either it works or it doesnt.
I do not know that those codes mean, sorry.

neither of these codes are in anyway related to your CKP (crank sensor) and if your engine runs, at all, its good. the codes that you have are secondary air injection, bank 2. and rough road signal. the SAI fault is odd, if theres only the one, most likely the valve itself. as for the 1590 code, you need to check the abs system for a resolution

Heres my original post that got me a Crank Position Sensor reply.

OK I posted about this before but never really got a straight answer or if I did I can't find the forum to read back on it. OK 2002 Disco starts like a champ in the morning or if its been sitting for over 3 or 4 hours I would say. However if I get it started and lets say drive to Walmart (about 10 minutes away or anywhere else) park it and go inside for 20 minutes; when I come back out and try to start it up it usually takes about 3 start attempts for it to start. What can it be? I have changed plugs and wires just because it was time. Bosch Plats 4. Magnecor 8mm wires. Battery is a 3 month old Optima red top. It starts in the morning so I rule out the alternator not charging thebattery. So now I turn to you guys for ideas. Mike I think you said something about a check valve in the fuel line but how do you explain the start in the mornings? I would think that is more than enough time for fuel to drain completely back to the tank if that was the case.
2002 Disco with 82350 miles.

CKPs are known for goin bad when they get hot, or get hot oil in the connector. 2 things to check. valve covers leaking, mainly on the rear of the drivers side. and next time it wont start, allow it to crank, see if the check engine light goes out when cranking, if not, its the CKP

My 2001Disco had the same problem. It would start sometimes, then other times it would not. The problem quickly became more frequent. It was the Crank Position Sensor. I replaced it and have not had a problem since (at least with starting!)

If your Crank Position Sensor has not been replaced at this point, then it is likely the problem. Best case scenario for you is that it is the Crank Position Sensor becuase it is not very expensive and can be replaced without much difficultly.

Good Luck.

Well I replaced the CPS sensor and the problem still persists. Same symptoms no change at all. I also tried the Seafoam induction, crank case and the gas tank but still sysmptoms exist. One interesting thing I did find was small metal shavings on the magnet tip of the sensor when I pulled it off. What does that mean guys?

when it doesnt start does the check engine light turn off? dont worry about the shavings, just a little wear off the flywheel from the starter, not a big issue. also, just to make sure when it wont start, it does crank, right? does it sound like its stumbling, or just cranking away? how long do you let it crank for?

it cranks everytime. but sometimes on the second or third time just before it starts it might start to "sputter" then either start or fail to start. is it true that a 2002 disco does not have a fuel filter that i can change.

Yes it is true. Try turning your ignition key to the 2nd. position for 5 seconds, turn it off and repeat it 3 time then do a start, what happens.
