Hey Mike, for the record when my CKPS failed 18 mos. ago it absolutely did shut down the engine while running. Sitting at a stop light running beautifully and it just died. Like turning off a light switch.

I got the cps out - needed alot of force as the metal pin was badly bent. Replaced with new cps and now the engine will start - but it won't run - alot of clicking noise and obviously missing - appears to be running on maybe 1 or 2 cylinders - this is all new. Just about every warning light is lit up now and the s and m are still flashing. This engine ran smoothly both before the starter was replaced and for a day after until it died. Is there something seriously wrong in the flywheel area where both the starter and cps are attached? I am more than a bit lost now. The truck is facing a 500$ tow bill to the nearest dealer (I live on an island with only 1 general mechanic). Help!

As a followup, the problems are now solved with help from LR mechanic. The problem started with a rebuilt starter installed 3 y ago - it literally exploded putting some shrapnel into the flywheel area, some of which lodged in the CPS groove and caused bending and breaking of the CPS. After that all panic lights came on the dash - not pleasant. After cleaning out the shrapnel and reinstalling new starter and CPS she runs beautifully, as before all this. Lesson to me is don't cheap out on parts - it will be new LR or Bosch parts from now on. Expensive lesson for me.

Wow, when you look at the reluctor disc you can see how stuff could get in that groove, and it would change timing for CKPS and potential damage as tolerances are tight.
